The movie was great, but the company was even better. We ate snacks under the stars, had an indulgently long intermission playing the Nintendo Wii, and I think I speak for all of us when I say we all had a memorable time. About a dozen cars and thirty people showed up. A great crowd for such an unknown film.

Thanks to Film Movement for providing another one of their great films! Everyone loved it!

And a very hearty thanks to the person who dropped a very large bill into the donation jar. I am still recovering from the shock and hoping that it wasn't actually a mistake where you intended to put in a one! Nevertheless, I thank you for your kindness and anonymous generosity. I'm really, really sorry to all those that came.

What happened, you ask? Over the winter, my equipment got a little rusty. I moved it from my car, and mixed it around. When I moved it back, things got a little funky. We saw that in the showing before last. Not to be caught with my pants down again, I invested some serious cash in a new DVD player and cables. Big mistake.

I wasn't able to test the new DVD player before the show, and just assumed it would work based on how much I paid for it. Not at all. It mangled my poor titles and intros, and then played the sound a full three seconds behind the movie. Thanks Toshiba.

Seeing this, I decided to switch to my old DVD player, but it failed as well. I suppose I could have switched back to the sound delaying player, but at that point I wasn't having any fun.

In any case, it was my fault for not testing. And I'm sorry I dragged you all out on a Friday night only to be let down by a crappy show. But I appreciate everyone for being so friendly and nice about it.

The gameplan now is to rework all the equipment, buy some new stuff, and relaunch the season in about a month. Before then I will do a few private showings to make sure that things are spit and polished like they were last year. So hold tight and thanks for being patient with me.

Zan saves the day!

It was to be expected that the first showing back after a two month's hiatus would be problematic. But I've never honestly been so close to having to call off a show. A few components have changed since the last show, and I ended up with no sound at all during the picture.

Then I realized my soon-to-be-replaced-and-sacrificed-at-the-alter DVD player has this weird defect where the headphone jack doesn't amplify the sound as much as the RCA jacks. Crazy. So we were left with hardly audible sound, and I was short a cable. So Julia and I went around to everyones' cars (about 15 this time!) and informed them all that I needed to go back to my place to pick it up. Everyone was really nice about it, and no one gave me a hard time (thank you, all!).

The wonderful part came with the very last car. Turns out a angelic mobmover actually had the exact cable I needed to fix it! Zan pulled it out of his car and we were back in business. Wow!

Then about 3/4 into the movie a cop car came by, but this time actually stopped for a good minute or two, and watched the film with us. I was sweating bullets and expecting the worst, but Julia noticed that they even turned off their lights like respectful mobmovers, a sure sign of police happiness about the project (yay us!). I suppose it was quite appropriate to be watching The French Connection, after all.

More mantras
1) I will pick more exciting films with less talking
The movie was faintly boring and hard to follow. Much too much detail for a drive-in.

2) I will fix my sound and bring backups
Sound was a disaster. Must bring two or three backups of every cable I have. Sound bleed/interference was still a major problem - must sort that out

3) I will kill my DivX player
The little bugger had the nerve to die again after the intermission, had to restart it to regain sound. Definitely needs replacing.

4) I will get better with names
I used to try to remember everyone's names at the show. But we've grown so large that it's frankly impossible. Still, I really need to work on this. Perhaps if I was less frazzled and distracted by the damn tech.

People were again very generous. One very kind but unfortunately anonymous soul contributed $40. Thank you ever so much! You just helped me buy my replacement DVD player. And special thanks to Zan (hope I'm getting his name right) for being in the right place at the right time, with a fairly obscure cable that really saved the show.

What a great night!

Thanksgiving showing

Another fun showing last night. I'm a bit surprised at how different this show was from those in the past. Quite a few things were changed:

1) While some people grouped around the lead car during intermission, for the most part people stayed in their cars and in their groups. I'm pretty sure I didn't meet everyone. A first.

2) I had my first semi-rude customer! I'll bet he didn't intend it as such, but it was a little weird because people are always so nice and thankful. After all, I'm not charging anything!

3) The cars were scattered WAY more than normal - usually people park really close to me, but this time we were all spread out. I kinda liked it. It's just interesting how things like that can change for no apparent reason.

4) People actually showed up REALLY early to this one and had dinner there! So very cool. (see some thoughts on this below)

These differences could be the result of a few things. First, it was a big-ass showing. We're up to about 12 cars (anyone get a real count?). As more people gather, it seems that we lose some of that original intimacy. Some of the best showings I've had were when 3 or 4 cars showed up.

It also could be due to the fact that were were many full cars this time around. A couple big vans showed up with a lot of people - and it also seemed like some of the cars already knew eachother and came together. This is AWESOME, but it may have resulted in people straying from the main group.

Lastly, I really wasn't on my game last night, so I don't think I was an especially fun host. My mind was all over the place, I couldn't remember anyone's names, and really wasn't able to carry on any interesting conversations. People would come to me saying how great the show was and such and the best thing I could think of was to say thanks. Sigh.

Now more than ever I think it's important to reinvestigate ideas for bringing people together during intermission. The snack bar is a slight draw, but I really want people to socialize with others rather than just me. Now that Jane's done with her important work at the graveyard, perhaps she'll come join us again? ;-)

Another thing I've been considering (and mentioned here at one point?) is of setting up my nintendo and playing a few games before the show. I've done some trial runs of this and it works wonderfully and is OSO cool. I'm thinking of making this an unofficial sideshow of the event - with people arriving early I already have patrons for it, and it would be cool to have a secret event that only regular patrons might know. Of course, by mentioning it here, it becomes a lot less secret, but then again, how many people really read this carp to the bottom? ;-)

And without attempting to sound sappy, last night's real star was my girlfriend Julia - I was stressing a lot at the beginning of the show, but she set me right. Thanks for being there!

Things I learned the hard way this time:
1) Get more sleep before the show.
2) Come early and bring a meal. Cause that's just plain cool.
3) If you'll be sitting outside, bring a cushion. Girlfriends are soft, but they don't like to be used as cushions.
4) Do not encode in Xvid. It causes things to skip and that makes you nervious.
5) Find your darn remote or get a new DiVX player. That timer at the top is distracting. Actually no, get a new one, this one sucks.
6) Your "short" intro did not work this time.
7) I liked the intermission near the beginning (30 mins in). How about you?
8) Putting the projector in the back results in a brighter picture, but 1) remember to turn off your lights, 2) bring another car to sit in. Better yet, mount the projector on your roof. That would be awesome!

Awesome halloween showing

Last night was a great showing. Our largest yet. 10 (?) cars showed, and we lined up in two rows. We watched the horror classic "Creature from the Black Lagoon" which while unspeakably cheesy, was great fun to laugh at.

Everyone brought candy and we had a t-shirt giveaway during the intermission. We had people give their best impressions of the monster (kudos to Julia for the idea!). There was one funny problem with the titles - I lengthened the intermission so we could have time to eat candy, but I didn't move the countdown - which now was a solid three minutes from the ending of the intermission. I saw the countdown - and told everyone to race back to their cars. And then we all sat in confused silence as the intermission continued. It was a little embarrassing but it was really the only screw up this time. Everything else was perfect! Anyway...

You guys are awesome!

Welcome Hollywood!

MobMov #2 has been officially started, in a fitting location: Hollywood. Don't get me wrong, private showings are fun, but not *that* fun. What happened was that I sort of decided late that I was going to do one this friday anyway, and then, thanks to my wonderful coding skills, when I sent the mail out last night, it went out blank. Bummer. So everyone had two hours notice, which apparently on a friday, results in no one being able to make it. Good, you all have lives. This was a test.

I've fixed the mailing list (I hope) and will plan on announcing showings a week earlier, and get more of a rhythm going.

I also want to start asking people for RSVPs. No one has followed through, nor bought the kit, nor asked to use the mobmov web site to get the word out. At the same time, i have the sneaking suspicion that I have indeed inspired people to do this themselves. Don't get me wrong, the mobmov was never about making me any money. For me, it's always been about having a great time and meeting cool people and I'm happy to carry it on for free.

I originally thought it would be cool to bill mobmov as this subverse/diverse theatre chain that would just pop up anywhere - sort of like the flashmob movement. Is this the kind of thing that people would prefer to have their own name attached to? Or is the recurring fee ($29/yr) unreasonable? Should I just give this out for free so it spreads?

In the end, I just want to get this thing out there to people. The one thing that was commented on is that we should include some sort of welcome message on the screen or separately projected via a batman-like lamp - so people who drive by are convinced to stay without me having to get out and welcome them. As it is, people generally are surprised when they find out they can join us.

I might want to update the Start title to include a dedicated runner explaining that the movie will start soon so people who arrive late know.

I'd also like to start starting at 8pm to get that ethic of showing up on time. Plus, it was a rather late show as it was.

Article in Boston Globe

The Boston Globe did an article on the mobmov over the weekend.

Idea: games before show

It's been suggested (I forget the name of source, sorry!) that I try out some sort of collaborative game at the beginning - like have people bring laser pointers and race around a maze or something. We got 100 votes, so I was expecting this massive showing (I was worried!), but it ended up being the same attendence as last time. Whew! The funny thing about it was, no one at the show actually voted for what we watched! This wasn't a bad thing cause everyone loved the show, but should voting be done at the showing itself somehow, since the only ones we want to vote are those that come? Maybe something cat-cool like the America's Funniest Home Videos key entry units from the 80's? To be listed next to the SC GDI is quite an honor.

214 members and growing as I watch. holy carp, this is going to blow up my server. but it will feel *so* good.

The mobmov as a franchise

Recently there's been a lot of interest in starting up other mobmovs in other areas of the country. I just got an e-mail today from a guy in LA raring to go, and there have been e-mails from people in Minneapolis, San Diego, and Pittsburgh just this past week. I think it's totally cool to hear that people want to set up their own and bring this thing into wider and wider circles! I think, the more the merrier, I'm happy to help them get going.

But what should new mobmovs be called? Obviously not "branches"... maybe "venues"... but there has to be something more interesting to call them. I admit that I am saddened that I didn't hold more events. This was a busy summer for me, and it would have been hard to run it with me gone. Maybe in the future we can diversify the equipment a little more so others can show mobmovs too.

I'm really excited how well the mobmov has done, how much interest it has generated. I can't hardly believe that we're almost up to 150 people on the mailing list! What started as a hair-brained idea from a tinkering geek, turned into something that people really enjoy and talk about. And I don't even know them. It's all really encouraging to see this progression.

It seems like yesterday that my friends Ray and Menzies joined me for the first mobmov (before it was the "mobmov") in the Longs parking lot on University and San Pablo.

What lies in the future? Well, I'll definitely be running it in the winter-time. It is such a blast to run a mobmov and meet all you cool people, it's tough not to want to hold one every week! I'd like to get more organized about it in general, so people can somewhat count on a set time. I'm thinking of perhaps the first Thursday of every month, plus a flexible date I will determine during the rest of the month. I'd also like to bring the mobmov into other communities (such as SF) and look into running it at events.

Please e-mail with your comments, ideas, and hopes for the future!

TPS reports and free snacks

Without a doubt this was the best mobmov to date. It was a really cool experience, but I was really nervous - unsure what they would ask me or what to expect. The booth was amazing though! Full of all sorts of expensive shiny technology. You never know how quiet things can be until you enter into a radio studio. It's like the walls eat sound. Amazing.

There was this really cute radio tech behind the glass and I really wish I had the chance to meet her, but she left before the interview was done. Her smile made me more at ease. If you're her, look me up!

So I popped on the headphones and had a chat with the radio host in LA. It wasn't live, thank god, so whenever I mixed up words or said something wrong I could say, "let's redo that" (an ability that would be nice in real life, eh?). They also seemed to repeat questions just to get me the phrase it in the right way. The interview ended up taking about 1/2 hour, but the show itself only featured me for about a minute. Even still, it's amazing to me to think that this little project of mine has grown so popular so fast. What's next, Good Morning America? ;-)

New title suggestion: Mobbie Movie

My friend Menzies, the guy who originally came up with the term "Mobile Movie" suggested that I change it to "Mobbie Movie". Mobmov is indeed a bit hard to pronounce accurately, and converting would make it easier to say. However, I've already created the logos and animations, and it would be a shame to have to re-create that. Besides, I like the connotations provided by "Mobile" and "Mob", which might be lost in "Mobbie". Who knows, if enough people start talking about it, they may just start calling it the Mobbie Movie. Fine by me.

First showing: American graffiti (I'm nervous!)

I really didn't know what to expect on this our first public mobmov. We already have about 50 people on the mailing list and I didn't know if 1) any, or 2) all, would show up. The showing a few nights before garnered no unknowns, so who knew? We held it up at the Lawrence Hall of Science, and we filled the parking lot. No kidding. Only three cars showed up at first (two couples I didn't know plus my friend Menzies), but little by little more people trickled in. At one point we had 8 cars in the parking lot, from seniors on an evening drive, to a car full of teenagers looking for some fun. It was absolutely magical meeting everyone, and watching their faces light up when they learned they could join in our movie!

"almost first" public showing

Unfortunately, this was a lesson learned in showing confidence - I was sure it would work, but in the mailing I made it seem that this was a "beta test". I learned a lot about how FM transmission works, and we seemed to get it almost perfect. Big mistake. Their site looks great, but they're obviously a one-man shop. The products are listed as in stock (even "on sale") but in fact they have none in stock and won't be getting them in "for weeks". They didn't even bother to let me know until I asked them where my order was.

So I cancelled my order there and bought one off eBay. It worked out being a little more expensive, but they guy is based in Santa Barbara, so I figure it might have a small chance of getting here by the weekend.

Even still, rain is forecast ths weekend, so most likely, the first showing will be the weekend of May 14th. I'm not sure why exactly, since you can pick up any old small transmitter from Target for $10. But a big-boy, capable of shooting out a distance of about 150 feet, sets you back $150. Menzies, Ray and I hopped in the RAV4 and rode down to the Longs on University/San Pablo for some late-night viewing of the movie Ray.

The fact that 1) the set up even worked this first time around, and 2) for such a long movie, is nothing short of a miracle. The only minor annoyances were a scratched DVD and a reception problem with the radio due to electric interference. A longer cable or upgraded FM transmission device would solve this problem.

The location felt right, but it wasn't ideal. Firstly, though the current setup doesn't generate much noise pollution, this was a residential area, so further viewings may generate complaints just because of the light. Furthermore, the optimal viewing wall was very high - much higher than the puny viewing angle allowed by the RAV4's windshield. Sure, it would have been really cool to project a 100 ft screen, but not if we had to crane our necks out the side windows! So we positioned the image lower - still achieving a 35ft (?) image, but with some interference over some gratings in the wall. The occassional car didn't prove too annoying.

We were all a little gunshy, this being the first viewing and all, so we were amused when people would drive by and slow down to have a peek at our movie. The one scary/funny bit came about mid-way through the movie when a cop car came sliding down the parking light straight for us. I had one hand on the power switch and the other on the ignition, but the cop just went right on by. This was an excellent first stress test on the system - apparently this is not something cops are too concerned about, let alone have time for. I take this as a virtual stamp of approval, don't you?

All this follows yesterday's installation of the new wire that runs from the battery to under the passenger seat, where the power inverter and DVD player now call home. This signals a significant advance over early-development models of the Cinecar, which involved popping the hood to access the battery. Pictures and more details about the current equipment will be written up in short order.

For now, stay tuned to this site for information on our first official launch. It's going to be soon!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://mobmov.blogspot.com/2005/04/whoa-its-working.html' title='Whoa!
